Jurgen, if you were to use vertical panels a lot of websites (including this one atm) would look terrible on an 800x600 screen resolution. They are optimized to use a as much of the little width that is available as possible, and if any of that width is used by a panel then parts of that site would be hidden horizontally, which means it would require horizontal scrolling to view (which is a major annoyance, especially with website).

with the growing numbers of widescreen displays there should be a greater advertency to support vertical panels better. horizontal panels, least of all two, as it is the default setting in gnome and xfce in xubuntu or the big/high panels of kde shrinks the horizontal space for office applications to heavily.

it should be pondered to have both, a vertical and horizontal panel in exactly the width which leaves on the rest of the screen ideally an application space in the commonly for digital video content used format 16:9.

e pondered to get vertikal panels

I added the following to the wiki page:

Note: The panel being on the left is only based on personal preference, this is not part of the artwork proposal and as such won't be default in Gutsy Gibbon.

It confused many people on the mailinglist too ;)

First of all, I like the professional looking theme and basics. One observation ... as a laptop user, screen real estate is essential for me, hence I use the smallscreen theme, with hidden tab bars. I wonder if the default theme should not take up less space, particularly in the status bar. Otherwise looking good, and looking forward to 7.10
